Cinematic Saturdays — Christmas Edition Double Feature

Cinematic Saturdays - Christmas Double

I said a couple weeks ago that I would be sharing one classic Christmas movie this month.  Well, I decided that this weekend I’m doing a double feature of two of my very favorite classic Christmas movies.  I know I kinda did a post on one of these already, but I don’t care! 😛

First off: Christmas in Connecticut

Christmas-In-Connecticut

I actually haven’t seen this movie in a couple years, though I’m not quite sure why.  I’ve liked this movie for a very long time.  And I really wanted to watch it this year because it had been so long… but I couldn’t find it anywhere!  (I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t gotten a copy of it for myself.)  Finally, I ordered a copy from amazon.com and I’m expecting it any day now! 😀  Meanwhile, I’m watching a rather awful version of it on YouTube because I wanted to watch it again before doing this post…

~ Starring ~

Barbara Stanwyck as Elizabeth Lane
Dennis Morgan as Jefferson Jones
Sydney Greenstreet as Alexander Yardley
Reginald Gardiner as John Sloan
S.Z. Sakall as Felix Bassenak

…and here’s a list of the Full Cast & Crew.

~ Storyline ~

Elizabeth Lane is the author of the widely read column “Diary of a Housewife”.  In her columns, she describes herself as a hard working farm woman, taking care of her baby, and being an excellent cook. But it’s all lies. In reality she is an unmarried New Yorker who can’t even boil an egg.
The owner of the magazine she works for has decided that a heroic sailor will spend his Christmas on Elizabeth’s farm.  She knows that her career is over if the truth comes out, but what can she do?  Hasty arrangements are made and comedy ensues.

Next up: White Christmas

As I mentioned before, I did a post about a year and a half ago about this movie (which you can see here).  But it was so long ago that I figured it was time to mention it again. 😉

This is truly one of my very favorite Christmas movies! 🙂

And I think the “Sisters” scene is probably my favorite part!  I can barely think about it without laughing.  And that’s why I focused on it in my other post.

WC-Sisters2

But really, the movie is overall a great all-year-’round movie.  I mean, it’s a musical comedy that features such great singers as Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney (yes, George Clooney’s aunt)!  What more could you ask for?  It’s one of those movies that you really don’t have to wait for Christmas time to watch.  However, since Christmas was yesterday… why not go ahead and watch it now? 😀

~ Starring ~

Bing Crosby as Bob Wallace
Danny Kaye as Phil Davis
Rosemary Clooney as Betty Haynes
Vera-Ellen as Judy Haynes
Dean Jagger as Major General Thomas F. Waverly

…and here’s a list of the Full Cast & Crew.

~ Storyline ~

Singers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis join sister act Betty and Judy Haynes to perform a Christmas show in rural Vermont. There, they run into Gen. Waverly, the boys’ commander in World War II, who, they learn, is having financial difficulties; his quaint country inn is failing. So what’s the foursome to do but plan a yuletide miracle: a fun-filled musical extravaganza that’s sure to put Waverly and his business in the black!

  1. I’ve never seen Christmas in Connecticut. I need to find that one and watch it. I like White Christmas and I like, It’s a Wonderful Life, and I’ve seen many cute and fun movies for Christmas, but I’ve never found a Christmas movie that really *wows* me. I’ll keep looking. 🙂

Christmas movies are much like Christmas fiction to me… I like, but I don’t usually *love*. The ones I mentioned this month, though, are definitely some favorites. 🙂
I hope you enjoy “Christmas in Connecticut” if/when you get to watch it! 🙂

These are the two classic movies I do make an effort to watch each Christmas. I started ‘White Christmas’ on Christmas Eve (hopefully I’ll finish it in the next day or two) and felt like Bing and Danny were genuinely trying NOT to laugh while shooting their rendition of “Sisters.” It makes the scene all the more fun. 🙂

…and ‘Connecticut’ is just, plain and simple, one of my most favorites. It’s a hilarious holiday rom-com.

I haven’t watched “White Christmas” yet this year. I honestly just haven’t had the time. 😦 But it’s on my list to watch whenever things slow down a bit. 😉 Oh, you should check out my post about the “Sisters” song– I linked to it in this post.
Haha! It is that! I can’t wait to get my copy so that I can watch it again! 😉
